Why are the symbols “back-slash” and “forward-slash” called “back-slash” and “forward-slash?”
Makes no sense.
We read our words left to right, so we should read our symbols left to right.
“\”
“/”
They both technically face forward, if you’re looking at them from the left to the right (as a logical reader would). One slants upwards, though, while the other slants downwards. So, when you think about it, it isn’t really clear which one should be called “back-slash” and which one should be called “forward-slash.”
Instead, we should call them “up-slash” and “down-slash.” This follows suit with how we read letters. Why would we read symbols any differently?
One of them slants upwards; the other slants downwards.
“Up-slash.”
“Down-slash.”
