Today is Cinco de Mayo, which is not Mexican Independence Day. Thinking so is erroneous and ignorant.
Does Mexico have an American holiday that they all celebrate?
If so, what kind of American food do they eat? Do they just straight up demolish a bunch of cheeseburgers and Coca Cola while listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival?
It seems a little strange that the US celebrates Cinco de Mayo, right? Obviously, it’s not a federal holiday in the US, but we still seem to acknowledge the holiday, at least to a certain extent.
The US had nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo, aside from the fact that we border one of the countries involved in the battle that took place that day.
Cinco de Mayo was a battle between US and France, and we’re pretty good friends with both those countries! Every Cinco de Mayo, does France look at the US and go, “hey, man. Again? Seriously? You weren’t even there. What team are you playing for?”
If we want to be totally bipartisan about what happened on Cinco de Mayo, we should stop celebrating on May 5th, and we also shouldn’t buy any croissants on that day.
