Excitement.
How do people get excited about things?
I used to get excited about things, but I haven’t been excited about anything in probably 10 years.
This isn’t to say that I’m unhappy; I just don’t particularly look forward to anything with a positive attitude as I have in my youth.
An example- I used to get excited for Christmas. When I heard Christmas music, I’d be thinking to myself, “oh, man! This is going to be a great Christmas!”
Nowadays, when Christmas is coming, I find myself treating it as just another day of the week.
The same thing with my birthday—I used to be so excited about my birthday.
This past year, I remembered it was my birthday 3 days AFTER my birthday. I thought to myself, “oh, man. My birthday was on Tuesday. Oh, well. There’s always next year, I guess.”
That’s how little these landmark days mean to me now.
So, what changed me? Why am I no longer capable of excitement?
Perhaps, I have a greater worldview now, which has given me the opportunity to understand how much horribleness is out there in the world, where, as a child, I lived in the bubble of my own happiness.
Until next time,
