I started carrying around a coffee cup filled with water all of the time.
I find that people are far more cautious when they are under the impression that you’re holding a cup of scalding hot coffee.
People have started making more room when walking towards me on crowded rush-hour train platforms. It’s great. No longer do I worry about discourteous strangers bumping into me (of course, the explanation for this behavior is not that people are getting better, but that people are selfish and don’t want a stranger’s coffee spilled on them).
A coffee cup is a great crowd repellant. I highly recommend this practice to anybody unwilling to punch rude strangers.
Until next time,
