How did “shhhh” become a thing?
If you’re trying to get someone to be quiet, why would you use such a quiet sound effect in order to do so? That’s rather ironic—is it not?
For this reason, rather than telling someone “shhhh” or “shush,” I go straight for the jugular.
“Shut the fu*k up!”
They know exactly what I mean by this, and they tend to feel more shocked and obedient than annoyed and rebellious afterward.
Tell people why you want. Don’t beat around the bush with your finger to your lips saying, “shhhh.” That’s the easy way out, in addition to the most ineffective route.
